Actually I have seen it on several shows and movies where some player catches the ball with their hat.

You mean the part in
A League of Their Own where Madonna catches the ball in her cap? Yes. I know it's baseball, but I haven't seen many softball movies.
There's also a part where Tom Hanks and Geena Davis are arguing over signals and the batter clearly takes more than 10 seconds.
