Question

Runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. R1 attempts to steal 2B but the second baseman, who is not covering on the play, obstructs R1 on her way to 2B. I immediately give the "delayed dead ball" signal and the runner was tagged out by 2 feet. What steps should the BU follow after the play is completed? Should the runner be declared "safe" and the obstruction explained? Should the runner be declared "out", time called then the obstruction call explained? Or some other procedure?

When an obstructed runner is put out before reaching a base she would have reached had there been no obstruction........I just call "Time" and announce the obstruction.......and award the runner the base.

I seem to recall a mechanic on calling the runner out......then calling "Time" and awarding the runner the base.

I just call time.......

Joel,

If the runner was safe at second, would you drop your arm and continue with the game? Would you inform the defensive coach of the second baseman's obstruction?

Just wondering,

ABZ......

I would call safe and continue as normal. I also don't keep the DDB signal up for more than a few seconds.

I would not mention it to the coach unless asked.
