I think WMB was ready for a play, and then when F6 surprisingly quit and the opportunity to judge was lost, his mind asked, "Shucks, did something happen ?"

Then there has to be an immediate judgment made by the umpire, and anyone who gives the ol' "I cannot read the player's mind" as an excuse to NOT make a call isn't worth the money they are taking for the game. Of course, we cannot read their mind. If we could, we wouldn't be spending our spare time out on a softball field.

Since we were not there, no one should have a problem with any call made by WMB since it was his judgment required to make a call.

so we must refer to the rules...

INTERFERENCE: The act of an offensive player or team member, umpire or spectator that impedes, hinders, or confuses a defensive player attempting to execute a play. Contact is not necessary.

So if that fielder had a valid attempt (with benefit of the doubt) of a play on the ball.. that should have PROBABLY been called as INT. You were there though and have been around plenty...
