I read posts where people talk about taking the NFHS tests several times, perhaps even every year, but here in Indiana, you take the test one time, and if you pass then you're qualified to work games for as long as you keep sending in your registration each year. They suggest getting training from your local association, but I've been a member of three different ones, and their meetings almost always digress into war story sessions for the old-timers. Most of the umpires work different sports since the season is so short up here, and they really don't spend ten or eleven months out of the year studying softball. Heck, even I don't. I officiate volleyball also and spend three months each year studying that sport.

The video is painful to watch, but for me it's not any more painful than watching my daughter's high school games. It's hard for me to bite my tongue. I'll see Julie on Thursday so I'll let her know that her video was a nice discussion point. I remember her showing us another video at both an ASA clinic and an ASA school two years ago. It was from a TV comedy show where the main character was trying out umpiring for the first time. Now THAT was funny. Just thinking about that guy pointing to the base umpire on a play at the plate makes me laugh every time.
That is from "Yes, Dear".. I have that one too... and it is awesome.. those NSA guys are very funny.

I umpire with transplanted Indianan, and he is one of the best umpires in our association. Of course, that led me to believe that all umpires from Indiana must get tons of good training, as his mechanics are sharp and crisp and correct, he is always where he should be on the field...etc.

Well all of us from Indiana are that sharp!! Ok not all of us....but a lot of us. I have to agree with Bob, to call high school games we are just reguired to take the open book test once and pass it then send in $50 a year to keep your license (up to 3 sports). BUT to be considered for the tournament you have to complete the test every year and attend a certification clinic every other year....for what that is worth....

Hey Bob I will see JJ Wednesday so I will say hi to her. You heading to Ohio this weekend for the NUS? If so I will see you there!!!

No, I'm going to the state school in Fort Wayne on Sunday, since I need to make the Fort Wayne umpires association meeting on Friday night. I haven't made it to a NUS yet, but always make at least one state school each year.

By the way, of course you're right about the requirements for the tournament. I haven't worked it yet, and won't for at least the next three years, so I haven't concerned myself with that. I do know that it's usually Steve Chamness that runs the NFHS certification clinic up here so I know that whoever attends gets excellent instruction.

I had a feel good moment over the weekend. I was spending quality time with my DD (half the time spent talking about softball of course ) and she asked me why I didn't work the tournament, and I got to tell her that it's because I'd rather watch her play than umpire a game. The smile on her face was worth 1,000 game fees.

Since you're seeing Julie on Wednesday, I guess you're from the Muncie area? You probably weren't in Logansport on Sunday?

Yes we do get lots of good training here, but that training comes from ASA, not from NFHS or any other organization.

Of course I'm envious of the umpire of which you speak. My wife hates that I always refer to myself as a Texan. She tells me I've been in Indiana long enough that I can call myself a Hoosier. She also hates that I've "brainwashed" my youngest DD into having UT be her first college choice rather than IU. I can sense March will be a tense time in our household with me picking UT for the Final Four and having all the Indiana schools knocked out before the Sweet 16

So, is your wife from Texas or a Texan by injection?
