Pitch Too Slow

FED rules (FP)

Are there any limitations to the height of the pitch? A coach last week complained that a pitcher was throwing pitches that were "too slow" and had an illegal arch.

No.

Ask him if he brought the beer.

I hear the same nonsense every once in a while.

One coach told me that their "regular" umpire claims the the pitch cannot have more than 3 inches of arc.

Both that umpire and this coach probably vote.

Think about that for a minute.

Three INCHES? Holy smokes. Someone ought to show him the math - the pitch would have to be going almost 100 mph to have less than 3 inches of arc.

I know. It's so ludicrous, it's hard to respond. But remember, he votes.

My question is, with a rule book handy, how does an umpire not know this?

Mike, my rulebook didn't work correctly. I bought one and put it my bag, just like the umpire mentioned by Grey did ... but the rules didn't transfer to my brain appropriately. Unfortunately, I had to read mine. Guess no one told Grey's coach's other umpire.
