Full vs. 4 stitch Behind Plate
Decided this year I was going to try using the full 8 stitch hat behind the plate. Most of the 'elite' blues in our group do it, and wanted to see if I could also.
WELL - I will NEVER go back to the 'little' hat ever again! I found it quite easy to master the twist of the mask to get it off without the hat, and I find it somehow more 'professional' to go up with a regular hat to work the plate - and the shade it provides helps also! Its funny to see a couple of our real vets who have the teeny TEENY old fashioned looks-like-two-stitch hats behind the dish. Is this another old vets vs. young 'uns thing?? (heck, we still have one guy who still uses a mattress working the plate!) |

What mask do you have that fits over the full-brim of your hat when wearing in "forward" or do you turn it backwards?
...nevermind, I just tried mine and it fits.

I haven't worn anything smaller than a six stitch in years...baseball and softball.
Note to those who say it won't work: If an 8-stitch won't fit, your mask is likely too tight.

When ASA went to the Pro-mesh, the mask came off even easier than with the wool. I see no reason to have multiple brimmed hats just for different positions.

My current mask (yer basic Wilson A3080) is just loose enough - I shudder to think though when when I need to replace it in a couple of years...or at least the straps... my other current gear: Pro 9 chest protector : comfortable, great in hot weather, and solid protection Gerry Davis leg guards - most comfortable leg guards ever, and still solid protection -LOVE the fact they do NOT bite into the legs, and no metal clips to rust! the Spot Bilt ankle high plate shoes. A fellow association member had bought them, and they did not fit him, so he sold them to me for $70!! New Balance turf shoes |

I, on the other hand, only use six stitch hats in the field and behind the plate. For some reason, to me, the 8 stitch is just too much brim to look good. Looks more like something maybe Elmer Fudd would wear. Again, JMO.
