You make the call - ASA Men's A SP

Bases juiced, 2 outs.

Long fly down rightfield line. R1 & R3 were off with the swing, but R2 was unaware of the number of outs and held up just off 2B.

The ball hits the top of the fence, bounces off the foul pole and back over the RF's head. As R1 crosses the plate, R3 rounds 2B and collides with R2, shoving him towards 3B.

The batter/runner is tagged (with the ball) before reaching 3B trying to stretch the play into a triple just before R3 touches the plate.

What's the call?

I've got two runs (R1 & R2) scoring. The collision is immaterial; there was no passing, and a runner may assist another runner without penalty. So, while unstated, I am assuming R2 also scored before the 3rd out.

But, BR made 3rd out before R3 scored, so R3's run does not count.

Ball hits the top of the fence and bounces off the foul pole?

Home run.

Good point. IF the foul pole is behind the fence (it isn't always, but should be).

Assuming the "top of the fence" was fair, either answer could be correct depending on the fair pole being in play or not.

Actually, acccording to 8.5.H, that is not a requirement.

H. When a fair batted fly ball strikes the foul pole above the fence level, or leaves the playing field in fair territory...

So wouldn't you know it, today I go do a girls' FP doubleheader. In the second game, a girl hits a high fly over the center fielder's head. The ball hits the top of the fence and then bounces up to hit the scoreboard.

Another interesting note on the day, especially since we were discussing NJ highways and back roads: on the way home, as I was cruising at 65 on I-295 North, a guy passed me on a motorcycle. Not at speeds of 150 or more, which is common for sport bikers on that road, but at merely 75. The unusual aspect of this was that he was doing a wheelie all the way. He had that front wheel up in the air for about 45 seconds (at 75 mph).
