Knowledgable fans?
I know, this sounds like an oxymoron, but this is a true story that happened to me last week in a high school game:
R1 on 1st, no outs, ground ball to F6 who fumbles before flipping late to F4 (safe at 2nd). Then F4 throws wild to F3 and the ball goes out of play. As plate umpire I declare dead ball and all play ends with R1 on 3rd and BR on 2nd. I award R1 home and start to get an earfull from the defensive (visiting) coach as he approaches me. Halfway there, his own parent yells at him that R1 was on 2nd at the time of the throw and the award is correct. Coach tucked his tail back between his legs and sat quietly on the bench. I have to admit this was a first for me. If only there was a spectator of the year award, I would have a strong nominee.

I had a close play recently in a 12U rec game where I thought the catcher missed the tag and signaled safe. I started getting an earful from the fans and the catcher looked at them and said, "I missed the tag" When they did not stop she said it more loudly 2 more times at which point they were quiet.
