My best guess is that it has something to do with the Civil War, from when the southern states seceded and where nicknamed "rebels". You see this nickname used throughtout the southern region to this day.
It just seems to be one of those regional nicknames that gets used over-and-over again for sports teams, laundromats, carry outs and car washes!
