High school softball-I am BU.
Runner at 3rd is off on release of pitch. Ball to batter. Runner, on her way back to 3rd, turns her back to F2 who "fires" a throw to F5. Runner dives to the outside (foul side) of 3rd (her choice-in my judgement). F5 has approx 1/2 of her foot in front of the inside portion of 3rd awating the throw (remainder of F5's body was on the F6 side of 3rd). F5 swipe tags runner for the out (bang-bang play). Coach calls time as she wants OBS. I inform coach that, in my judgement, her runner chose to dive to the outside portion of 3rd and did not alter her path because of F5's position. I believe I made the correct call. Please offer opinions. [Edited by U of M Sam on Jun 19th, 2005 at 09:01 PM]

You done good, as some TV character used to say.
BTW, as the only one I've noticed stating HS & LL affiliation, how difficult are the differences? I know NFHS best, then PONY, ASA, NCAA. My granddaughter just started softball this year and I was ignoring the rules to keep down my confusion. But now she mad an all-star team and if I make it to any of those games, I guess the rules will be more important. Please provide advice.

Some basic softball differences between NFHS and LL: Little League: Pitching limits effective based on age group, no advance on non caught 3rd strike for the Major and Minor level (12/U), 3 or 4 defensive time outs per each pitcher, ball only to batter on non hit illegal pitch (pitching requirements are generally same as NFHS), no 15 run rule after 3 innings (10 run rule effective), slightly different wording for the "look back" rule, catchers are required to wear "dangling" throat protector, no CR although there is a "special pinch runner" rule, no DP/flex although Big League (16 and up) has a DH rule, player entry (subs) varies somewhat from NFHS based on LL regular season and tournament play. You can check http://www.littleleague.org to obtain more info or poss. request a rule book from your granddaughter's LL organization. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Sam
