I think maybe the difference that you saw was in NCAA,
Sec 18 f 5 is:

5. BR, after overrrunning 1B, must immediately return non-stop to 1B or,
if she does not retouch 1B, she must make an attempt to advance
to 2B. If after passing the base, runner is heading back toward 1B within
the basepath extended, she may make a decision to go to either base. However,
stepping beyond the extended basepath in foul terriority commits the runner
to 1B while stepping beyond the basepath toward the 2B side commits runner
to 2B.

Slightly different wording from ASA & NFHS.
