Is there any difference between ASA, NFHS and NCAA look back rule besides in NCAA if a runner overuns first and is walking back towards first base on the first base line extended, they can go to first or second when the pitcher has possesion of the ball in the circle. I read the rule and it seems like there is something else that is different between these three. Thanks, Dave

My question is getting down the board a long way since no one is giving a reply. I did this just so people will see my original post and maybe reply. Dave

I just read all three, and see no real substantial difference, other than particular wording such as that used by ASA in 8:7:T:3:c, that is echoed in NFHS 8:7:3:c. NCAA doesn't include this wording, but merely states that "once the runner has established the direction," then they are committed to that base.

shipwreck,

I think maybe the difference that you saw was in NCAA,
Sec 18 f 5 is:

5. BR, after overrrunning 1B, must immediately return non-stop to 1B or,
if she does not retouch 1B, she must make an attempt to advance
to 2B. If after passing the base, runner is heading back toward 1B within
the basepath extended, she may make a decision to go to either base. However,
stepping beyond the extended basepath in foul terriority commits the runner
to 1B while stepping beyond the basepath toward the 2B side commits runner
to 2B.

Slightly different wording from ASA & NFHS.

Additional Question on this rule

While on the look back rule, I have a question. R1 rounds 2B, pitcher receives ball in circle, R1 stops, start again to 3B, stops, starts again to 3B. She never changes directions, only stops and starts several times. Should she be called out for look back violation?

Strike4,
Think about that question. What are the runner's obligations? Is a stop and start (in the same or opposite direction) a decision? Is this runner allowed a second stop? Now, did the pitcher do "something" that made the runner think she was making a play?

The pitcher just looked at the runner but made no play on her. So what you are saying is, the multiple stops and starts is the same as changing directions. Thanks for the help.

One stop, then immediately go to next base or return.

Strike4,
Yes, as Glen said - single stop and start is OK, next stop is an out(if not right on a base).
