Last night, a 3rd base coach for Team A was ejected in the 5th inning of a boys slow pitch league game (ASA) for arguing about a call. Team A was losing at the time. A baserunner for Team A was going home and there was a play at the plate. The baserunner made a good slide into home. The catcher was in position to make the tag, received the throw, tagged the baserunner and then dropped the ball after the collision with the baserunner. The umpire called the baserunner out. Be it right or wrong, it was his judgement that the catcher held and controlled the ball long enough to tag out the baserunner. The 3rd base coach challenged the call "vigorously" on the field and then went to the dugout, pulled out a cell phone and told the umpire that he would never ump another game in this league again. He asked the umpire for his name. The umpire offered his name and then ejected the coach. The coach started to leave the field and then returned to continue the argument. The umpire then "ended" the game.

Should this game pick up at a later date where it left off, be forfeited by Team A, or be concluded with the score remaining at the point where the umpire ended it?

Best option I've heard is:
Suspend game.
Give it to the league to decide.

It depends on how the umpire ended the game, but with an ejected coach who refuses to leave quietly and within 1 minute, the umpire is within his authority to declare a forfeit. ASA Rule 10-9C.

JMO, but the league should also take further actions against this coach for threatening the umpire.

The coach was ejected, but not asked to leave the field. So he did not refuse to leave. The game was called too hastily. Its a league decision however I would rule resume game from that point.

Post It's a requirement

Chuck:
It's a requirement that a person that is ejected leave the field. No need to ask. Bu Bye Coach, Game OVER!

That might be the rules for Federated but regular Rec. Council stuff does not have that stipulation.

As soon as the coach walks back out of the dugout, I would hold up my hand and say, "Coach you have been ejected, you now have 1 minute to vacate the premises or this game is forfeit." and then turn and head back to the plate. If he still wants to continue jawing, then I wait what I judge to be 1 minute, more like 30 seconds then call the game a forfeit and leave through the other team's dugout.

Yep, if he's still around after a minute ( a short minute ), BALL GAME!!. Final score is 7-0.

Samc,

Glad to see your talking NY minute and not like Rick, Texas
minute.

Rick, this is one time we will go with a Yankee...Shorter time
the coach is around, the better in this case.

Make a note for the UIC review or league response....

1) Coach ejected for USC
2) Coach use electronic communciation device in dugout during game
3) Coach refused to exit the playing field after eject
4) Coach was an jacka$$
5) Coach was a Laker fan

That should answer any questions that may come up.
