Look back rule

I have run into this a few times and want to make sure I understand this correctly. R1 on 3rd legally leaves the base after the pitch is released. As F2 throws the ball to F1, R1 starts back to 3rd. When F1 catches the ball in the circle and turns her back to R1, R1 stops and immediately advances toward home.

Legal?

If R1 stops before touching third, still running, allowed one stop/direction while pitcher has ball.

Yeah, that is how I understood it, just wanted to make sure. Been close to a decade since I studied these.
