Hit batter

Was watching high school level game today. Plate umpire called batter out after getting hit by a pitched ball. Come to find out the ump says she got hit by a pitched ball while out of the box. Is there a rule to this effect?

Are you sure of the explanation? No rule basis if correct UNLESS:

Was she trying to hit the ball at the time?

Was she out of the box over the plate and the pitch was in the strike zone?

If either then perhaps it was strike 3?

If either, poor explanation. Need more info.

TWP possibility out for leaving the batter box and charged with a third strike.

You left out the getting hit part.

Yep.
Just a Third World alternative that she was out regardless of the HBP.

Perhaps a knee or elbow in the strike zone? I wouldn't consider that to be "out of the box".

So as some have opined, perhaps a better explanation is warranted.

I think required, but not as a spectator, and we don't know what the coaches heard.
