That is a crazy play. The umpire had to go to U1 for help on the checked swing. The whole defense forgot that it was a dropped third strike. Heads up play by the Team A coaches to get the batter's attention and send him to 1st, then around the bases.

I would hope that I would recognize the situation, but this certainly never happened to me yet. Now, we have to bring the defense back out and pitch to another batter as well.

Yes, ASA men's B fast pitch national (2003), loser's semi-final game. 5th inning, batting team down 2-0, two outs. Batter swings (everyone knows he swings, that's not disputed), ball "short hops" the catcher. Defense leaves the field, batter starts for the dugout (first base side), then decided to go to first. Rounds the bases, basically walking from base to base.

Defense asked about everything, from "out of baseline" to "he stepped into the dugout" to "he took his helmet off" (removing batting helmets on bases seemed to be a big thing that year). Overall, the defense wasn't happy, but took it well. Everyone on the team handled it very professionally, which is perhaps the best part of the story.

That score must have been what the offense team needed, as they won 3-2.

Several years back doing a high school game, bases loaded 2 outs. Batters swings and misses, ball gets past catcher. Batter just starts walking toward dugout while runners are all advancing. Catcher retrieves ball and overthrows 1st into right field. Right field retrieves ball and overthrows 1st back to catcher. Meanwhile all the runners have scored and now the batter finally gets the hint maybe she should run to 1st. Catcher finally makes a decent throw and barely retires the batter on a banger at 1st. Then had to explain to the coach no runs scored.

Well the game in the OP video looks like its from the famed Koshien Tournament in Japan - the year ending, national tournament that is really a big deal over there, so the teams involved are usually the best in the country.

I found it interesting the plate ump got on the microphone, guessing to announce ruling. I don't have my sound on and I'm guessing it was in Japanese regardless. Imagine having to do that with some of the fans we get at games. Yikes.

Me on the mic: "The run scores. Batter up."

Yeah, this Japanese umpire makes Ed Hochuli sound like a one-word conversationalist. I don't speak Japanese, but this guy must've given the complete history of the uncaught-third-strike rule.

I actually had a D3K 3 bagger several years ago. Swing at a pitch in the dirt for strike 3. Batter starts walking to the visitor dugout, while the coach is yelling at her to run to first. Catcher rolls the ball to the pitchers plate, and the defense goes to have a between inning huddle in front of their dugout. The batter-runner ended up on third base.

I figured I'd have something strange that day since it was HS JV and I was the only umpire. Home coach wasn't happy, but since it was a 5 inning mercy in her favor she got over it quickly.
