Aren't both examples of IFAB Law 11, "interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate"? That is, both appear to be an offside offense.

The law doesn't specify...

Thx, Cecilone. Most of the rest of the umps are silent on balls except “ball four!”, or they may say “a little high” or “that was inside”, etc. And many (though not all) seem to signal “strike” just...

Compromise on ASA/USA ball/strike signal?

Longtime reader, occasional poster. This is 80% rant and 20% request for advice, so feel free to call me out if I’m being a baby.

I have umpired softball for just under 10 years. I was well...

Second guessing myself on a non-call of Infield Fly Rule (ASA)

ASA Men's Slowpitch. Recreational level of play -- some stars mixed in with Bubba from the bar.

No outs, R1 on 2B, R2 on 1B. B3 hits a high pop that off the bat looks like it's going to...

+1

It seemed like a textbook call, but Joyce and Dumuth sold it immediately. They left no room for doubt and did a good job of defusing a potential mess. Great work.

Possible interference on batter-runner for standing still?

I had a play in a recent game and am now second-guessing myself, so I would appreciate your opinions/rule cites.

ASA, slow pitch. No outs, bases empty.

Batter hits a shallow popup directly...

I brought the topic up because I had the situation of the defense changing her actions (moving a step toward the infield) to avoid...

Retired runner proceeds straight to base -- do you have interference? (ASA)

Speaking ASA.

R1 on first, no outs. B2 hits a grounder to F6, who throws to F4 for the force out. R1 is halfway between bases at the time of the force and continues running straight toward 2B. ...

The league I call for didn't buy in when the rule change was passed. I don't mind the question but it surprises me -- aren't many adult slow pitch leagues doing the no-stealing option?

Agreed on the unnecessary wording in the book, and I too prefer to break it down Rich's way.

Similarly, ASA 8-2-J could be reworded to "When an infielder intentionally drops a caught fair fly...

That, plus if the wrong batter made out at bat and is now due to bat, she bats, right? (Last year I would have had B5 bat in scenarios above in which B4 made out at bat.)

ASA 2013 BOO (non-coed)

Hi, all -- I call ASA slow pitch, no stealing (men's and women's, but not coed). Our league teams often have problems with Batting Out of Order. So I want to make 100% sure I am clear on the 2013...

Thanks, Tony. You are right, and my first instinct to protect R2 is not supported by the book. She is out.

I have a harder time "selling" that we can't count R1's run. I agree that it's a time...

Trailing runner tagged out after lead runner is obstructed

ASA answers preferred because that's what I call.

Situation: Two outs. R1 on 2B, R2 on 1B. B4 hits a ball in the gap.

R1 is obstructed by F6, falls, barely makes it to 3B and stops. Umpire...

I can see the U of T HC asking for Interference but not being taken seriously, given that PU had his arm out before the collision. On the other hand, if she was arguing for USC, she could at least...

Thanks for this discussion. It's helpful to illustrate how we as umpires can take things into consideration after making a correctable mistake.
