Penalty enforcement

Whatcha got (NFHS)?:

1/10 @ B-37. The B defender intercepts A’s pass on the B-2 and his momentum carries him into the Team B end zone. As the intercepting player attempts to run forward out of the end zone, he fumbles and the ball rolls into the field of play where a B teammate falls on the ball at the B-4. While the ball was loose, the BJ flagged B for holding on the B-2 to prevent A from recovering the fumble.

Team B got the ball with clean hands, so Team B will be keeping the ball.

Fumble (ie: end of related run) occurs in the end zone. Basic spot is the 20-yard line.

Foul occurs behind the basic spot, but that's irrelevant because the foul is not by the offense. Therefore, enforce from the basic spot, 10-yard penalty, 1st and 10 for Team B at the B-10.

I'm 99% sure this is enforce the same way under NCAA.

Sorry, but I disagree. Yes B got the ball with clean hands. However, the momentum exception comes into play here and the basic spot would be to 2 yard line. Enforce the penalty from the 2 and it is B's ball 1/10 from B1 yard line.

Ah yes, I looked at 10-4-6, but not at 2-41-9.

So, you're right... basic spot is the 2-yard line. Half the distance, 1st and 10 for Team B from the B-1.

Momentum exception does not apply because the ball did not become dead in the end zone. 10-4-6 is not applicable because the team in possession at the time of the foul IS responsible for the ball being in the end zone.

A and B designations do not change during the down, but offense/defense does. This foul was committed by B after the change of possession so they are the offense at that point.

The foul is enforced from the end of the related run which is in the end zone so this results in a safety (8-5-2c).

Momentum is off when B fumbled and the ball came out of the end zone. B's foul is inforced from the end of B's related run (spot of B's fumble) which is in the end zone. Safety, 2 points for A.

10-3-2 & 3b, 10-4-4 and Fundamental X6
