The problem is - they were NOT standing in an area they are allowed to stand. The dark line must remain clear - COACHES can stand behind that line. If you'll look, there's another thinner white line about 3 yards back that is the player/participant line --- THAT is where these players should have been.

bison- I think the strength coach was o.k. where he stood behind the white border. It was the inactive players beside him that should have been behind the next line back. At least that's what I read on some site yesterday, which now escapes me.

The first 3 yard band is for chain crew and officials only. The next 3 yard band is for coaches and situation substitution players only. The rest of the players and bench personnel should be behind this band or 6 yards from the out of bounds line.

Field Markings 1. The playing field will be rimmed by a solid white border six feet wide along the end lines and sidelines. There will be an additional broken yellow line nine feet farther outside this border along each sideline in the non-bench areas, and such broken line will be continued at an angle from each 30- yard line and pass behind the bench area (all benches a minimum of 30 feet back from the sidelines) at a distance of six feet. In each end zone, this broken yellow line is six feet from the solid white border. These yellow broken lines are to be eight inches wide and two feet long with a space of one foot between them. In addition, within each bench area, a solid yellow line six feet behind the solid border will delineate a special area for coaches, behind which all players, except one player who is charting the game, must remain.
