Where would I find a list of foul that I would give the personal foul signal for? Also what is the difference between a personal fould and a ordinary foul. Is it just that its a 15 yard penalty?

Rule 9 contains all personal fouls. If you look at the bottom of an article detailing a foul, under the heading PENALTY you will see the associated penalty along with the signal in parentheses, such as (S38). The numbered signals are in the back of the book.

The Redding Guide also has a breakdown of all fouls and penalties but I can't remember if they have the associated signal or not.

It's called a personal foul because it's a foul against a person, as opposed to, for instance, encroachment, which is a foul against an imaginary line. For a time all contact fouls, including illegal use of hands, were considered personal, but that ended almost 40 yrs. ago.

Very rough memory search/guess here, but I'm going to say the category "personal foul" was borrowed from basketball ca. 1930. Before that they were just named and signaled individually.

In the Rules Book. Don't you have one?
