just a brain teaser

4th and 12 from A34. A quarterback rolls out...fades back rolls out fades back...at about the A25 there is a hold followed immediately by and IW.....

What are the options, and what is the most likely scenario for what the choice turned out to be....NFHS rules.

CANADIAN RULING:

IWs behind the LS with no CP is A's choice: keep the play or repeat the down.

NFHS 4.2.3.c & d

An inadvertant whistle ends the down. Inadvertant whistles are administered as follows:

c. The team in possession may choose to either accept the results of the play at the dead ball spot or replay the down if, during a down or during in which the penalty for a foul is declined, an inadvertant whistle is sounded while the ball is in player possession.

d. The penalty shall be administered as determined by the basic spot and takes precedence over inadvertant whistle administration if, during a down a live-ball foul occurs prior to the inadvertant whistle and the penalty is accepted.

So, if B declines the penalty, A will in all liklihood, replay the down.

If B accepts the penalty, it will be A's ball 4th and 10 yards back from the end of the run or the spot of the foul ( I couldn't decipher whether the hold occurred behind or beyond the basic spot).

at the same spot

MN for purposes of this discussion...the foul and the end of the run were at the same spot

Then I have 4th and 31 from the A15.

B won't decline the penalty because A will replay the down. So B has to accept the penalty, which is enforced from the A25 (basic spot & spot of the foul), putting the ball at the A15, 4th and 31.

Yep

It was a 7th grade game so we really had to "talk" to the captains to get the right decision LOL....

Canadian Ruling con'd

Except you forgot about the foul. Team B can accept the foul if they wants, thereby preventing the replay of the down at the same PLS. Instead, with the hold it would be 4th and 22 at the A24.
