I had the 'pleasure' of listening to some NFL games on the radio yesterday. (I was quite annoyed by having a corporate sponsor for every little thing!)

Anyway, I heard a couple of play-by-play announcers say something to the effect of "They bring in Joe Blow as the 'third tight end'." Very interesting.

It's my opinion that the trend in position naming away from geometry and towards function has done enormous harm to understanding of football.
