illegal forward pass

thanks for the feedback on Aug. 27 re: a forward pass when the qb is past the line of scrimmage. Here is another one. If a running back carries the ball past the l.o.s and then either laterals or passes the ball back behind the l.o.s to the qb who then throws a forward pass (btw..the first forward pass of the down) is that legal?
