My (not too veiled) point was that he could have phrased it in a way other than, "these guys obviously screwed it up and then gave some lame excuse - what do you guys think?"
Those officials made a mistake which impacted the game and took responsibility for it and knew the proper administration. Luckily, 'announcers' can make mistakes all day and have no impact on the game - they just impune you and I when they percieve a mistake by one of our own.
Would you walk up to, say, Greg Gumbel at a party and say, "Hey, I heard these announcers on a game yesterday who totally misstated a rule over and over - they obvioulsy didn't know what they were talking about, and then they wouldn't admit to it - what do you think about that?" If I were him, I'd take offense.
