Welcome the input of this discussion board on the following:
4th and 3 on Rs 25. Field goal attempt falls short, ball rolls to 6 , and is dead, untouched. During the kick, R is flagged for holding at the 10yl. Where is penalty enforced? To me, PSK applies, and the spot of the foul is beyond the the basic spot(end of kick). Therefore, half the distance fromthe 6, 1st and 10 for R from the 3. Am I looking at this backwards? Forgive me if this sounds too easy, It's my 2nd year. Jaysef |

I vote yes
A field goal attempt IS A SCRIMAGE KICK
once it is clear the attempt will not score it is treated like any other scrimage kick (punt usually) in your case R fouled during the kick (i am assuming after it left the expanded neutral zone) since it the ball became dead untouched at the 6 this is where the kick ends (and we have our beanbag down lol) and we will have PSK enforcement from the 6 which would be half the distance. If the kick would have rolled into the endzone it would be 1st and ten at the ten |

I believe you have it right Cruser, if the ball were to roll into the endzone.
The confusion started when I was diligently reading my latest edition of "Referee", and that exact caseplay was outlined. The editor had the penalty being marked off from the spot of the foul. (October's Edition, pg. 17, Play 4). It stated the Hold at the 10 was "behind" the basic spot! I look forward to every edition, but have found more than a few mistakes, usually when involving PSK. I scour the rules relating to the caseplays presented and it has helped me quite a bit. I thought maybe I missed something here. Thanks to the expertise on this fine board I can sleep tonight! J |
