Numbering exception

This question has to do with the numbering exception. If it is 4th down and A is in scrimmage kick formation, can a player that is in the game under the numbering exception also be an eligible receiver? In other words, can #31 come in the game to take the place of #55, and then be an eligible receiver? Of course that means A only has 4 with lineman numbers.

Yes, if he’s on the end of the line or in the backfield when the snapper puts his hand(s) on the ball.

If he lines up as an eligible, he isn't using the exception. The numbering exception is for using eligible numbers in ineligible positions.

Then one of his teammates must be, because they only have 4 ineligible numbers on the line.

I think the question stems from the way the exception is written..."any A player numbered 1 to 49 or 80 to 99 may take the position of any A player numbered 50 to 79."

Expanding on the OP's scenario...
#81 has been the end, #55 the tackle. On 4th down, #31 comes in for #55. #81 takes the tackle position and #31 is on the end.

I think the OP is questioning that because #31 came in for #55, he should take the tackle position. I would point out to the OP that the rule only uses the word "player" and never uses the word "substitute." So, #81 would be using the exception in this case and would be perfectly correct in doing so.

31 or 81, as I said, an eligible number lining up in an eligible position is NOT using the numbering exception.

In my scenario, 81 isn't eligible...
We are agreeing, but I'm not seeing the point of your response.

I guess because there was no A81 in the OP.
