New Play posted on football play on the web...
http://mysite.verizon.net/res0kkni/f...deo/index.html I posted a new play on the web. It deals with the issue of a back moving slightly in the backfield. I think this is highly debated issue and would like to get your opinions. Go view the play and let us know what you would call? No Call, False Start, Illegal Motion, Illegal Shift? Thanks for the 227 people who participated on the block-in-the-back play. This is the most participation in a single play so far... The play was up for about a week. Question for the play: Are the two key blocks legal. Poll Results 1. Both Blocks Legal 45% 2. First block Illegal block, 2nd one legal 47% 3. Second block Illegal block, 1st one legal 3% 4. Both blocks Illegal 5% Close call on it... sometimes wish there was an official god who would give us all the answers... ![]() Please send me any feedback you have on the site. Many of you are asking about archives. I am working on that issue. Thanks for your continuing support and encouragement on the site.

Without sound, I am assuming the back missed the snap count.
Flag it as a false start if he missed the snap count. [Edited by mikesears on Sep 16th, 2003 at 12:08 PM]

This could be called a false start, however, since both players still have the right to reset themselves, I would wait until the snap to call the illegal shift. The back moved but did not start forward, hence the shift not false start.

I had to run the clip several times before I noticed the RB move. In real life this would be obvious. Most likely I would have an illegal shift. However, if this back had been borderline previously (and I have "talked" to him about it) I just might penalize for false start.

I've got an illegal shift. Depending on the level, I might let this go. Freshman/JV would probably have nothing and let the back know that what he did was illegal and tell him the next time it will be a penalty. Varsity level, definitely a foul.

I agree that at any level below varsity, I'm probably letting this go, and mentioning it to the back (or coach - depending on level) afterward.
At varsity, this looks like an illegal shift. It's hard to tell whether he "simulated the start of play", especially with no reactionary movement on the other side of the ball. But while that's borderline, there's no question they've got 2 guys in motion at the start of the play.

just my 2 cents
I would be inclined to call false start for the reason that he began to move and then stopped, and took his position he had at the beginninng. It appears that he missed the count. If he had continued to move, changed his foot position then I would have called Ilg. shift. This is what I use as the WH of my crew. I know by rule the back is allowed to reset, but reset to me means that he moves from his former position.

I may tend to disagree with this one. I see no advantage gained, in fact, he lost advantage by rocking backwards. The D was not effected by his action. I do believe I have a no call.
