Traveling or Legal Move? (Video)

Looks like he establishes a pivot foot properly then uses it properly. OK by me. BTW - starmanhoops, welcome aboard. Hope you have lots of fun being here.

Thanks Hugh, the fact his off foot comes down and then his pivot foot comes up and then he shoots is all good? Cool move, just seems like it would normally be called traveling? I'm just trying to come to grips with it being legal. I appreciate the knowledgeable answers.

The only part of this move that is close to a travel, is he may have gathered the ball with his right foot on the floor. Live, most refs will have the gather in the air though. |

Merely lifting his pivot foot before the shot does not make the move a travel. Otherwise, jumpshots would all be illegal. |

That is perfect logic....on a lay up, you establish a pivot foot and push off the ground on your non pivot foot. Because he moves in a funky direction we think it may be a walk...this a great and legal move....

This, sadly, is the kind of play that may get called a travel by many low level (i.e., untrained or poorly trained) referees because it looks funny and young kids often don't know how to use a pivot foot. (As an 8th grader, my son worked on using his pivot effectively, and as a big guy could cover some space on a legal pivot in the post to get past a defender -- but he got called incorrectly [in my completely unbiased opinion!] for travelling several times by refs that I suspect weren't actually watching his footwork, but the distance he covered. At higher levels, the refs are properly focussed on the actual footwork.)

Can't see the video right now, is this the Kaminsky play?
If so, a lot of footwork, no travel. That big kid from Xavier had good feet in the post also.

I do not have a travel. The foot does not stay still on a pivot.
Peace

If you stop video At 16 second mark he gathers ball with both hands next to his ear, his right foot is on the floor. This would make this move a travel. This happens so fast in real time its hard to tell when he gathers.
