Peac

Jeff:

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but here in the immediate Toledo area, our school kids are wimps. They close school with just two inches of snow on the roads.

I remember walking to and from school in 12 inches of snow and it was 3 miles, up hill both ways, .

People here would laugh at 2 inches, in more way than one. This is not Atlanta.

Peace

I know. I grew up in Youngstown and we would laugh at 4 to 6 inches.

I grew up on the south side of Chicago. In all my years in school, I only had one day that my school was closed unscheduled. It was during winter of my sophomore year in HS and the HS was closed because the boiler broke and it was freezing in the building. I remember going to school many times with over two feet of snow on the ground.

Here in Portland, OR. it's a totally different matter. They close the schools if there's snow flurries predicted thirty miles away. I think about 80% of the adult population here have never driven in any snow, not even an inch high.

I've got a buddy here who grew up in NYC. He feels the same way about this area.

I spent a year teaching in California's Central Valley. I thought they were pulling the new-guy's leg when they told me about "fog days." But they actually have them -- they start school a couple of hours late when the fog is too thick!

(When the fog is thick, the school busses cannot make a left turn on two lane highways within the visibility zone. I was amused that it was too dangerous for the students to get there, but teachers were still expected to get to school at the regular time.)
