Snow Postponements
Anyone lose any games yet because of this impending storm? Stay safe out there everyone

Living in the Midwest it is rare the schools cancel anything with an impending storm. We have had school days cancelled for the temperature like that happened a few weeks ago.

Jeff: I don't know about your neck of the woods, but here in the immediate Toledo area, our school kids are wimps. They close school with just two inches of snow on the roads. I remember walking to and from school in 12 inches of snow and it was 3 miles, up hill both ways, :p. MTD, Sr. |

I know. I grew up in Youngstown and we would laugh at 4 to 6 inches. MTD, Sr. |
I grew up on the south side of Chicago. In all my years in school, I only had one day that my school was closed unscheduled. It was during winter of my sophomore year in HS and the HS was closed because the boiler broke and it was freezing in the building. I remember going to school many times with over two feet of snow on the ground.
Here in Portland, OR. it's a totally different matter. They close the schools if there's snow flurries predicted thirty miles away. I think about 80% of the adult population here have never driven in any snow, not even an inch high. I've got a buddy here who grew up in NYC. He feels the same way about this area. |
I spent a year teaching in California's Central Valley. I thought they were pulling the new-guy's leg when they told me about "fog days." But they actually have them -- they start school a couple of hours late when the fog is too thick!
(When the fog is thick, the school busses cannot make a left turn on two lane highways within the visibility zone. I was amused that it was too dangerous for the students to get there, but teachers were still expected to get to school at the regular time.) |

I grew up in PA and experienced many a snow storm and blizzard. Wimps or just different times? |
I grew up in Delaware everyone-that's my curiosity

You all don't really know what a snowstorm is. I live in Alaska. We pretty much play no matter the weather. We do have some schools that drive 3-4 hours to come play in our area, and if there's a good dumping, they MAY cancel. We usually know by 10 AM whether the buses are on the way or not.

Living in CT, I've already lost 4 or 5 games to snow days. Around here, if school is closed, they have to postpone the game. It is really inconvenient when we have a night snowfall and everything is cleaned up and fine by noon.

Waiting...
I haven't yet, but I'm sure that my game tonight will be cancelled before too long.

School's closed here today for 1/2" of snow.....and now, at 1030, the roads are clear and everything is pretty much melted. Silly.
PS - another postponement.... |
