10-6-12 Top Ten
Top Ten Reasons . . . why some officials won't conform to calling it according to new rule 10-6-12 this season:
1. "Those are only game interrupters." 2. "I don't like the coaches yelling, 'C'mon, let 'em play out there!'" 3. "What, are they taking 4-27-1,2,3 out of the book next?" 4. "I ain't callin' those ticky-tack fouls." 5. "Out on the perimeter, this kind of contact poses no ad-/disadvantage." 6. "Some teams won't have enough players to finish with five!" 7. "We'll let the players set the tone and try to fit into their style of play." 8. "If the dribbler can play through it, we ain't gonna call it." 9. "This game is gonna take all night if we call it as written." 10. "Great for 'North-South'; doesn't seem to apply for 'East-West'." Bonus Reason: "They put out new rule books this year?"

In IL we had rules similar to this last year (actually, they were more strict).
Yes, the first night was a mess. Yes, the first week the games ran a little long. By the end of the first month, almost all had adjusted. it helped that "all" the coaches and "all" the officials got the same memos and videos and powerpoints -- in general the early complaining was about the rule itself, not about how the officials were calling it. |

I do not understand why this rule will be difficult to enforce. Everything listed in NFHS R1-S6-A12 has been a foul since before 1962-63 (and that includes the NCAA). Put air in the whistle the first time it happens, then put air in the whistle the second time it happens, etc., etc., etc. Eventually the players and coaches will get the idea. MTD, Sr.

They are the same ones that made it necessary to spell it out in black and white after years of POEs telling them to clean it up. They just don't get that the POEs were directed at them.

I'm in the middle of a B18U Fall Rec League that is traditionally very tough and physical. As has been stated, I really believe enforcing the rule and being consistent has helped clean-up these games. Players and coaches seem to enjoy the freedom of movement this now allows and have become quite aware of what they can/can not do. Looking forward to the scholastic season.

Tuesday had two teams first game of the year . A very long night, had the same home team last night and everything went smooth. Home coach told me they had spent almost their entire practice going over the rules again. I could see the kids working hard to keep hands off the ball handler .
