T or Talk?

VB 2nd quarter in a close game. H1 drives the lane and is fouled by V1. My partner is the L ball side and calls the foul. I am T opposite side and hold my spot to observe the players. My partner gives his preliminary and signals two shots. V1 is now holding the ball and turned his back on my partner. He power dribbles the ball then gives a loud Pfffttt noise while rolling his eyes and then proceeds to toss the ball about rim height and while putting his arms up in the "WTF" gesture. He did catch the ball on the way down. Do you T him or talk to him?

Depends on if I have "talked" already or how demonstrative the actions were. Sometimes officials take these types of actions to be disrespectful when there are instances that they are done out of frustration towards themselves. It's really a HTBT situation.

As described, I'd probably be serving T about 90% of the time (the other 10% would be if there were some extenuating HTBT circumstance).

Each of those actions by itself probably warrants a "KNOCK IT OFF!" or a more polite talking to.

However, put all those actions together -- technical.

I did call a Technical foul. The Coach of V told me I should talk to his player because it is important game. I told him all the more reason for the player to retain his composure.

No, coach YOU should have talked to your team and told them not to do anything stupid, and to keep their composure, etc, because it's an important game.

I usually have a set respond to the "importance" statement. I don't let the "importance" of a game effect my judgement. Stupid behavior is stupid behavior in any circumstance. That's why its called STUPID. Duh!

Sounds like a T party to me. V1 just got invited.

When a coach says I should have talked to their player, I usually respond with that technical isn't on me, it's on him.

I respond with "You should have talked to them when the season started".

"Coach, we've got you and the captains for talking to him."

How about this, "Have one of your 6 assistants talk to him?"

Too much?

I might use that in a summer game.
