NCAA-Men's Habitual Shooting Motion

As I said:

"Play 2- A1 is dribbling the ball and attempts to turn the corner at the top of the key to drive down the lane. B1 fouls A1 as A1 picks up his dribble. A1 then steps with his right foot and then pushes off with his left foot before beginning to raise his arm(s) or hand(s) to release the ball for a layup. The try is successful.
Ruling- The foul occurred before the act of shooting began. Therefore, the goal should not count. Charge B1 with a personal foul and shoot appropriate free throws if Team A is in the bonus. Rule 5-1.10 and 4-8.1.

Comment-The language of 5-1.10, “The try starts when the player begins the motion that normally precedes the release of the ball”, refers to the hand(s)/arm(s) in preparing to release the ball on a try for goal. Examples of the act of shooting motion includes raising the ball with the hand(s) and/or arms to shoot a layup or jump shot or the downward motion of the hand(s) or arm(s) in completing a dunk or alley-oop play. This act of shooting motion does not include but is not limited to picking up the dribble, catching (gathering) the ball, or advancing on the court with one or both feet.

So it does NOT include the "usual foot or body movement" that's allowed in FED?

Seems like it. Latest NCAA-Men's "You Make the Call" video had 2 continuous motions plays that John Adams judged were non-shooting fouls because, though the players had gathered, they had not began their shooting motion in his opinion. He received some push back and his response was that Art Hyland would be coming out with an interpretation clarifying when the shooting was to be judged as beginning.

I expect a real mess over the last couple weeks of the regular season as far as consistency on this type of play.

Looks like the NCAA has gone looking for a problem that didn't need a solution.

I agree with you.

For over 60 years the start of the Act of Shooting for a player who is dribbling the ball is when he stops his dribble. Why? A player cannot shoot the ball if he is dribbling the ball. When will the insanity stop?

Good God, it sounds like they're trying to validate all the idiots who yell out "on the floor" when we're awarding free throws.

I bet it'll get worse at the HS level especially if we start seeing more high profile calls on Sportscenter.

No it won't. We still have our marching orders.

I'm just talking about the complaining from the fans (I know I know...who are they?). We all know how much they like to reference other levels when complaining about calls.

It may get worse, but the more consistent we are at our levels the fans come to "expect" what we do as well.

Coaches/fans/players fall into 2 categories as far as I am concerned. Unreasonable or reasonable, and a majority are reasonable. Its just the idiots make the most noise. A lot of times it comes from not being able to control emotions and matching expectations with skill.

For a nominal fee of $100.

You have to be part of the NCAA-Men's Central Hub in Arbiter.
