I don't think we've ever gotten one of these clips on the NCAAW side where the reason behind the interpretation wasn't explained...and explained again. To just say "this is a blocking foul because of 4-17-5" and not go into the possession aspect of the play creates more confusion. It also has an aspect of, "this is what we want called, deal with it."

But, the NCAAM side seems to have more (and / or more frequent) plays / clips

In the baseball clips they always explain why they want something called a certain way also. I was surprised there was no explanation on this play from Adams.

Adams should thank himself for being a fan of college basketball, since that's what he sounds like with this interpretation.

I'm hearing there was a change in the winds...

John Adams retracted the video and stated it should have been a PC.

So now the world is good again.

From Our Leader

Dear Officials and Administrators:

There is an error in VB #14.* The play labeled "Block/Charge" that shows the Texas player catching the ball over his shoulder, that I said was a blocking foul, is actually a player control foul.* It is clear that the player in white catches the ball and takes a step prior to the contact.* As such, the player in white is NOT entitled to time and distance.* Thanks to all of you that pointed out the error. (See 4-17-4-a-c* p49).* I will delete the play ASAP so as to avoid further confusion.

Sincerely,

John W. Adams
NCAA National Men's Basketball Officiating Coordinator

Wow, that is good to hear. I was worried for a minute.

Good to hear but a bit worrisome that he put it out there in the first place. It makes you think the first video wasn't vetted through Art Hyland before it was posted.

Nevadaref Fri Feb 21, 2014 07:25pm

Rather than delete it, wouldn't it be better if he would edit the audio to state that this is should have been ruled player control foul and continue to leave the video posted for educational purposes?

I'd be more disappointed that it took someone to point this out to him. It's one thing to miss a call live on the court, it's quite another to completely kick the ruling with video.

I'm with Nevadaref, too. It would be great to leave out there for review as an incorrect call.
