Easy Peasey Lemon Squezzy ...

I make sure that there aren't more players warming up than there are in the book, and that the starters have been noted. I also look for illegal numbers, and duplicate numbers. Finally I make sure that my name, and my partner's name, are written in the book.

What if there are more warming up than in the book?

Check with the coach and see if the numbers they have listed are correct. Not much else you can do until the a player comes into the game that is not listed.

Peace

The most important thing is, I make sure the number of players in the book is not less than the number of players on the floor. If there are more in the book than warming up, no harm done. I'll glance at numbers, because every so often, something funky shows up (like numbers 6-9, a few weeks ago).

When I first started working basketball, which wasn't all that long ago, I was taught that you count the players on your end of the court and let the R know so he can compare that number to what is in the book. Then the R can look at the number of players on the roster, starters, duplicate numbers, etc. I mentioned this in another thread, but a majority of guys I work with now simply pick the book up and have each coach check it and don't count players or anything. I don't really care for this approach because even if the coach checks the book, he is not responsible for the scorer copying names and numbers correctly.

I count the players, then make sure there are at least as many names in the book as players on the floor for each team.

Then I draw a line under the last name (if there's less than 15) to make sure there aren't any additions made, and I initial that line.

Then I sign the book.

Have the official scorer check the roster that was given to her, as happened in my first game of the season. As soon as she saw the V book, she said she screwed up in transcribing the names. She fixed it, and we moved on.

Do I need to start saying shut up to someone other than Mark Padgett, and Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.?

We were taught...

Count players on your side of court during warm-up and give the count to the R.

Make sure that if the number of names IS DIFFERENT than the number of players warming up the coach is aware. There may be players that are missing for various reasons and the coach us just using the same player list each game.

Make sure starters are marked.

Draw a line after the last name on each side and initial.

Have HC review the book (and mark starters if they are not) and sign the book to singnify they have reviewed it.

Is there a reason so many of us posting here say they look at the players names?

I check that there are numbers next to each line, and check a few on the court to make sure they match, but don't pay any attention to the names. Don't think I know the names of any of the players anyway.

Who said they're checking names?

Hmmm...made me go back and reread a little more carefully. Guess everyone was saying things like "the number of names" and I just read "names".

Stupid Evelyn Wood speed reading courses.

Best story with checking the book was... long time coach in the area 20+ years... have good repoire with him... No starterr marked in the book at the 10 minute mark and his team is in the locker room.
So i marked 5 names for him...

I made sure we visited early around the 3 minute mark and said coach i have good news and bad news.... i'll even give you the good and bad news together
We are not going to start the game with a technical foul but you might not like who your starters are. He immediately realized what he hadn't done and said thank you my mistake.
