Free throw adventure

Had a friend call me the other day and had an interesting one.

Team A is shooting their 2nd of 2 free throws. Great rotation on the shot but it is short. So short it barely glances the rim slowing its rotation. All the kids think its a violation and it bounces three times in the key and finally rolls out of bounds. It is given to the defense team. Is this correct or is it an AP rule instead.

Thanks in advance

Why would it possibly be AP?

What if it hit the rim and then bounced over the backboard or hit the wire?

Same thing.

Don't confuse lack of team control with being the last player to touch the ball before it goes OOB.

Bottom line, it is an out of bounds violation because the FT shooter was the last to touch the ball on a missed FT shot. Do not complicate this issue.

Peace

very strange situation ... all of the players had enough basketball IQ to know that "the ball not hitting the rim" is a violation. Yet non of them had enough basketball IQ to grab a ball that is just sitting there and no whistle was blown.

If I'm the C or Lead I'm thinking about saying "the ball is live" if the ball ends up not going OOB.

Maybe to a bunch of sixth graders, but not to high school varsity players.

Hey, when it comes down to it, nobody can really get a handle on a bunch of sixth-graders, can they?

Sure, if they're varsity 6th graders.
