Buzzer beater, wrong way
Today's ESPN Not Top Ten, number six.

Clock winding down, defense gets rebound and shoots at the wrong basket. Horn goes just before the ball hits the rim. Official is on national tv counting the basket

I'd like to think they thought it through and waved it off.

It happened a few years ago in a Virginia Tech game (defense accidentally tipped ball into basket--tip before buzzer, ball enters after buzzer) and Teddy Valentine erroneously counted the basket.

The NCAA sent out a memo afterwards.

Just to be clear since I have never had this actually happen:

Ball is dead at buzzer because it was not released on a try by definition, correct?

Yes. What is a definition of a shot? & When does the ball become dead? Know these 2 and you know the solution.

How close was the ball going through the basket and buzzer sounding? At the time did they have replay capabilities?

I forget all the particulars but the ball was definitely tipped before time expired and definitely entered the basket after time expired. Teddy and crew got the call wrong. I may still have memo b/c at the time a very good friend of my was working in the CAA which has the same supervisor as the ACC.

This I just don't get. These are not obscure rules which I can understand messing up. I can also understand a new official (less than 3-4 years) getting this wrong too. But IMO stuff like this is pretty inexcusable.

I remember seeing video back when it happened and there was no doubt the basket should not have counted and the memo acknowledged as much. I'm quite sure we even discussed it here the forums.

Oh but this happened couple years ago in my old association in SoCal. A "Top Rated" official did the same thing in a televised game. Him and his partner didn't know the definition of a shot. And by top official I mean state tourney top.

It being SoCall and all, quite sure they are now working for Violet Palmer or Ed Rush.

You cannot have a try at the wrong basket. So the ball immediately becomes dead at the horn.
