The rule book is clear...if you go by the book, only the head coach can use the coaching box to stand. The assistant coach is not the head coach.

The coach who stands is the HC for that game. That is the coach to whom I will respond. If the coach paid to be the HC wishes to retain the privileges of the HC, then she needs to keep her AC seated. The book doesn't define the HC, but some states may do that.

Whose request for a timeout will you grant? The pregnant seated coach, or the standing coach? Who are you going to charge the direct technical foul to when a player dunks during the pregame? Who are you going to charge an indirect technical foul to when a team member on the bench mouths off to an official?

Just make it clear to her and him that for the purposes of all rules, HE is the head coach - if they are good with that, then play on.

As far as I'm concerned, the HC is the coach that attends my pre-game meeting.

That's who gets to stand in the box and who gets to ask me questions and call timeouts, etc.

There's some case play (or interp) regarding "co-head coaches". Apply that reasoning.

If I tried enforcing that around here, I'd be 'that guy.' Even worse, as there is zero rule support for it.

Not here in the Land of Steady Habits. Some head coaches refuse to attend the pregame meeting, in fact, we have a special guideline for this specific situation:

Captains-Head Coaches-Officials pre-game meeting should occur prior to start of game. If the head coach
refuses to attend the meeting, notify Board Commissioner, who will notify the school athletic
director and CIAC.

AC is the head coach if that's who's standing for the entire game. Do you realize one of your conference's has a team that does this? They did it all the way through their state championship title last year.

What team was that? I heard Martinsville used to do that.
