Introduction: Hi Guys!

First post in what looks to be a great community. I can't wait to get involved. My wife is the local high school athletic secretary and I'm thinking about officiating some of their games next season. I was hoping to bone up on everything.

I live in Tomball, TX and have been into everything basketball for as long as I can remember. I have two young girls.

I look forward to meeting everybody!

First point: Depends a lot on the size of the school, the level of the game, and how well known you are personally there, but local is not your best option.

Officiating is the anti-Cheers......you wanna go where nobody knows your name.

Not always and certainly not in every case, but usually it is not acceptable to officiate at the place you have a relative that works or attends a school. Usually officials are going to work in a relative bigger range of schools than that. It might even be a policy in your area that you will not be able to work at the school your wife works.

Peace

First of all, welcome to the forum.

Secondly, investigate the different Officials' Associations in your area. Most all basketball officials belong to an association, and in some cases that's how assignments are given out.

Certainly in Texas you will need to belong to an association to work high school games. Your wife should have the contact information for your local association, or be able to get the name of the organization from one of the head coaches if she doesn't know herself. Chances are slim to none that you'll be allowed to work games where your wife is an employee. But that shouldn't sway you from joining up and getting started. Good luck and have fun!

Hello, my screen name is letemplay, but everybody pretty much calls me...well, probably different names depending on what my posts may have said. I will add to others comments: Don't know your level of basketball knowledge, if you have played or coached somewhere prior, but might also be a good idea to seek out the local rec leagues and possibily start there, working your way up to high school as your experience increases. Hey, in some cases, if you can do Adult Wreck games, you can handle most high school kids

Hi. My screen name is Mark Padgett, but my real name is Skippy Weaselpants. Be sure to search the board to find out the first rule of officiating. It is extremely helpful.

Stop with the introduction of your screen names. While the hazing of the fresh meat is acceptable, I am afraid it is getting redundant.....

It's easy to not click on this thread.

I'm Rich, one of the people who moderate this board. This is not the place to advertise for the company you work for -- I'm not saying that you necessarily are, but when your first and only post references who you work for and your profile does, too, it makes us suspicious -- we spend a lot of time eliminating spam and banning spammers, so our Spidey-senses are up.

I've left your company name in your profile. The fact that you didn't include a hyperlink has me leaning towards "not spammer." Come back and prove me right.

Welcome aboard. I live in the Houston area and would be glad to help you get oriented with the rather confusing basketball officiating layout here. Feel free to PM me for more information.
