Electrified barbed wire surrounding the box would be okay with me. Or one of those buried invisible doggie fence systems where a shock is sent via a collar when over the boundary--I'd be okay with that.
Frankly, it isn't much of a problem around these parts. If sincerely coaching, a little latitude is given but not really taken to the point of hideous abuse that I've seen. If yelling lungs out at one of us while out of it, well, that makes it just that much easier to assess a T. Though I really have never had to in recent memory. Can't recall a coach putting up a hissy-fit when asked tactfully to get back in the box.

Violation Or Technical Foul ???

Intentionally going out of bounds for an authorized reason is a violation. This is often confused with delaying a return inbounds after a throwin, which is a technical foul. In my opinion, both should be a violation, and carry the same penalty.

That's his point, both used to be technical fouls but were changed to violations.

I disagree that this really needs changed, however. Enforcement varies by area, but where it's enforced consistently, the coaches don't complain.

imho, the reason why coaches complain when I remind them to stay in the box?:

the officials who worked their games previously NEVER said anything/enforced it. Remember...you promote what you permit.

I'm confused? Is this thread about "Fashion Police" issues?

Trust me, it doesn't help. NYC uses the college box in boys and girls. The coaches complain just as much when you tell them to move back.

Forget the coaching box. Just make the area directly in front of the table a forbidden zone. That's kinda the way it's enforced around here now.

Even with those possible changes, we would still have to tell a coach to comply and I just cannot understand why we have to even ask in the first place.

Peace
I'd be thrilled with the college box in HS games. Did a game on a college court yesterday that wasn't marked and I almost said something to one of the coaches who was near the end line. Then I noticed they hadn't marked a HS box and the coach was just coaching and I let it alone completely.

Seat belt rule in all but varsity here. That's even worse, IMO.

Since the title of this thread is "Coaching Box"....and NONE of the comments, including mine, reference anything other than the coaching box issue, yes, you are some how confused in thinking this is dealing w/ uniform issues......

That being said, my comments apply to "fasion police"-issues as well. When previous officials continually don't enforce the rules - the official who does enforce a specific rule gets the same aforementioned reaction.

Honestly I do not care what other officials say or do. It is a rule and we have the right to simply just enforce the rule. If I am telling you something or using preventative officiating to not be so strict, then you should have enough sense to just comply. Coaches want it both ways. They want us to tell them everything but when we do they get upset. It is like telling a player to be careful not to reach across the throw in plane, then being upset when you violate the rule.

Peace

Which is why I made my post. Sometimes our colleagues are our worst enemies, not often, but sometimes.

Rich - do you still have an 8' box too?

It was a 6' box when I moved here. It's been a 14' box for a while now.
