That makes sense. If the players are running side-by-side down the court or the defender is chasing them from behind, the defender is not in their path and does not have LGP.

IMO, that statement isn't about the direction the offensive player is facing but about the defender's position relative to the offensive player's path.

Exactly...it is implied by the location in the guarding rule and is assumed that you don't have to redefine each term every time it is used.
