NCAA 4 On The Floor

Team A comes out of timeout and has 5 on the floor. For some reason a player from team a doesn't think he should be in the game and goes to the bench leaving only 4 on the floor and the ball is put in play about the same time as the kid leaving the floor.

Team A is on defense so as a crew we do not kill it as the offense notices only 4 on the floor and are trying to score. Coach from Team A realizes it and sends a player to the scores table to check in at the next appropriate time. Neither coach said a word and were both well aware of situation.

Was it handled correctly and where is a rule reference or case book play? Couldn't seem to find anything in either book.

I believe in high school they can have 4 on the floor and play can continue and as long as they don't send the 5th off the bench to gain an advantage they can come in anytime without going to the table.

Any info would be great!

Interesting. All five came out, but one returned.

Had a coach send a girl to scorer's table to check in, table notified him she wasn't in the book, so he called her back but still pulled a player out. I said "coach, you want a 5th player?", he said no, just leave it. !!??? OK, coach.

Later in the game he sends a sub to the table, who promptly runs strait on th floor, hockey style (ie didn't wait for a dead ball, much less to be ushered in by an official). What do you do in that situation!!??

First situation, not allowed. Coach must play with 5 if he has 5 eligible. "Just leave it" is not an option.

Second situation: T (unless it's early in the YMCA season, then you can educate the coach and player)

In our rural state, the junior high populations are getting so small that often times the jr. high teams have 5th and 6th graders on them. Last year one school had two fourth graders. We're talking knee high to a grasshopper. I was not blessed with an overwhelming vertical presence, and, next to these two kids (they were twins), I felt like Wilt Chamberlain. Neither one could quite grasp the concept of checking in at the scorers table. They would just buzz out onto the court, quicker than quick. Each time we would stop them, counsel them...to little or no avail. What do you do? They were just so darn cute.
