Why was Cahill making all of the decisions and doing the talking when he was not the referee?

Why do you think that he was not the referee?

He's a lawyer from upstate New York, so he naturally took over the "negotiations" between both AD's, coaches, and game management staff. Keep in mind that while Bo Boroski was going to toss to start the game, the R isn't required to toss - he can delegate to whomever he chooses.....it's very possbile that Cahill WAS the R and choose Bo to throw it up.

Just ask MTD, Jr., what I do when I am the R in a three-man crew. I take the U2 position for the Jump Ball because not only am I too lazy to toss the ball, I am too lazy to raise my left arm to chop in the clock.

I feel the same way. what's the big deal about tossing up the ball to start the game? I gladly defer.

The big deal is that too many officials can't properly toss it.
