Glad To Be Back

Summer league games started for me tonight. Got 21 in all, including nine that will be three man mechanics, my first experience in three man.

Had a set of three tonight. In the first one, my partner and I each had a technical. His was for intentional dead ball contact after a loose ball scramble, mine was for taunting after a blocked shot. Also had a basket interference that my partner called. First time that's ever happened in one of my games. Oh yeah, did I mention these kids were incoming freshman?

Second game, my partner and I had a double whistle on a block/charge play in the lane, I was T and my partner deferred to me. We handled it perfectly.

It was great to get back out on the floor. Six tomorrow night so I'd better go ice.

Exactly, Billy. From outside the 3-point arc, A1 throws a lob pass, which is intended for A2 to catch and then dunk. But the pass is a little high and enters the basket without being touched by any other player.

Years ago, we had to judge whether this was a pass or a try and award 2 or 3 points, based on that judgment. Now it counts as a 3, regardless of the thrower's intent. I don't like the way the rule is worded, but this is the case that fits the rule's intent exactly. First time it's happened in one of my games!

I would like to see a player leap from beyond the 3pt line, and catch and dunk an alley-oop.

Had a teammate do this when I was in high school. I found out after I started officiating that the refs got the play wrong (they counted it as three).

Welcome to the world of three man ( no I don't say three person, not that politically correct or am I democrat)...

Question about your block/ charge...was your double with the C or L. I really don't ever have a dbl on those plays in the paint. I believe that they are "coming towards" someone and believe they will usually have a better look.

Could you tell us a little more as to where in the paint the play occured. If you have a patient whisltle, I bet you don't have many whistles on those type plays.....

Sorry, I should have clarified that my games last night were in two man mechanics. The play originated from my primary.

Be careful. There seems to be an epidemic of players throwing basketballs at officials this summer. Hopefully, somebody with big hair will save you.

IMHO, this is one of those fallacies that gets passed around because it sounds good. Many times (maybe not "most", but many), the C has a better look at drives down the paint than the Lead has. It's amazing how easy the block/charge call is when it goes right down the middle of the lane. The C is often the only one who has a clear look through the two players on those plays.

But because NCAA-M wants the L to have primary on anything coming to the basket, we keep up this belief that the L always has the best look. As always, JMHO.

Haven't been on the forum much since the season ended. Did I miss a good story?

While the C has the best look at seeing whether the defender was moving forward at the time of contact (or when the shooter jumped), the C also has the absolute worst angle to see if the defender was shifting or leaning sideways into the shooter....which is actually far more likely the situation.

What the C does generally have a better view of is illegal hands as the shooter takes the shot...the hits on the elbows and such.
