Hello,

Very common occurance in games is the sideline or base line pin down...where A1 picks up his dribble and is pinned down at sideline or baseline.

B1 has tight D on A1..A1 then falls out of bounds or travels.

Always get coaches or players saying I was pushed when they go OOB or other coach yelling Travel!

Looking for some Guidance on calling this type of play.

If he's actually pushed out, it's a foul. If he's trapped and falls and you call a foul, you're bailing him out. I have a lot of travels or OOB violations on these types of plays. Do the coaches complain that there was a foul? Sure. They do all the time anyway. Doesn't change anything.

Simple, if a bump caused him to go OOB or travel, then call the foul.

Otherwise call the OOB or travel.

Its your judgement and why we get paid the big bucks.

I had something similar last night.

As A-1 is dribbling and moving next to the sideline, B-2 bumps A-1, and A-1 easily passes her by. Normally, I let this go, but the bump caused A-1 to violate by stepping on the sideline. Blocking, B-2.

The trick for me was controlling the instinct of raising an open palm -- a knee-jerk reaction when the ball-handler steps on the sideline -- and raising a closed fist instead. I'm not sure if I executed that smoothly.

Some guys around here preach that its okay to go from open to closed. Just never go closed to open.

If you would (normally) have passed, and assuming (yeah, I know) that the space near the sideline wasn't sufficient for the offense to pass, then I probably would have gone with the OOB call.

The Rookie:

One of two thing occured: (1) B1 pushed A1 out of bounds, meaning that B1 has committed a CF; or (2) A1 fell out of bounds, which is a violation by A1 and Team B gets the ball for a Throw-in.

It should be noted that the NBA did away with the "force out" decades ago,

I don't know if this was ever a real high school rule, probably wasn't, but I do remember using this rule as a teenager playing pick-up games in the driveway.
