Usually, when multiple subs come into the game, the official doesn't put the ball at the disposal of the thrower until everybody figures out who is guarding who. Officially, no one "requests" a matchup. In essence, that's what's happening.

I've seen the following...
Rec league games...before every quarter, the five players will line up across the division line from one another and the coaches will determine who is guarding who. This carries over into high school once they get there, but the coaches obviously don't come on the floor. Happens more with girls, and eventually they break the habit. |
