I have never seen this in high school. I have only seen this at recreational lower levels and they just line up at half court and point out numbers. In lower levels they actually stand in front, but for high school that's probably not necessary.

But then again, I'm just "imagining" how I would do it.

wait until the defense is done saying "I've got #xx" before you administer the throw-in or FT.

I think I saw this about twice the year they empathized the rule. Outside of that I cannot think of a single time this request has been made. And that probably was about 8 or 9 years ago.

I've seen it maybe once or twice in high school. Middle schools do it all the time, even when they come out after an intermission or time out and there were no subs. I just let it happen; it's a comfort-level thing with the kids.

Usually, when multiple subs come into the game, the official doesn't put the ball at the disposal of the thrower until everybody figures out who is guarding who. Officially, no one "requests" a matchup. In essence, that's what's happening.

I've seen the following...

Rec league games...before every quarter, the five players will line up across the division line from one another and the coaches will determine who is guarding who.

This carries over into high school once they get there, but the coaches obviously don't come on the floor. Happens more with girls, and eventually they break the habit.

In the "Ancient Days" we would have the teams line up as if we were going to have a Jump Ball. Everybody found who they were to guard and then we put the ball into play.

Funny. I did a girls entry-level (4th/5th) travel league game this weekend. At the start of the 2, 3 and final quarter the players all stood opposite each other at the division line and stared. None of them spoke, not a word. None of them pointed, not one finger. I figured the coaches would point something out for them, but no, nothing. I was at the division line opposite and one of the moms asked me what they were doing. "Apparently nothing" I said. She asked if I was going to match them up. "No, not me" I said. Each time, after about 10 seconds I just called for a thrower in and away we went. Go figure.

Don't think there's a formal mechanic...just something you learn to do over time. Part of good game management.

Around any of three different jump ball circles. We would use the closest one.

I am glad I read this post. I have never talked about this rule with anyone but I was definately reading the rule different than the rest of you. In my head I was reading that the captain could request a matchup, which to me meant they could bring in subs to match up the incoming players. The example I could think of was if team A brought in thier three biggest players who had been sitting out and team B was also giving their big guys a break. This way, team B wouldn't be at a serious disadvantage until the next dead ball which could be minutes. Am I crazy for thinking that?

I just ask the opposing team if they are matched up and ready. Never had anyone ask for more time.
