Wizards off to a rough start in this shortened season - Wizards Insider - The Washington Post

In last night's Wizards vs Bucks game, the Wizards played an eligible player, who's name was "accidentally" left off the roster sent by the league and not caught by team officials or the coach - who signed off on it. That roster was copied into the game book. Then, the Wizards sent the player, Roger Mason Jr., into the game and he scored seven seconds later....... Table - "Ref, he's not in the book." Mason was excused from the game and sent to the locker room. A T was issued. What a mess!

PS - this article was on the same page as the lead sports article proclaiming the past year in DC Sports History - "WORST YEAR EVER." It's true, It's true.

I bet that they would never leave John Wall's name off the roster.

It reads as if he was possibly ineligible for other reasons. If nothing else, failing to report him to the league in time made him ineligible.

Apparently, they awarded the points to Rashard Lewis - does anyone know the rule on how that works?

Nope, if a player is not on the active list, he's not eligible to play in the game period.

NBA Case Book (2011-2012)

289. Player A13 enters the game and at the next dead ball the officials are informed that he is not on the Active List. What is the procedure?

Player A13 will be removed immediately and a technical foul assessed. If the officials were informed prior to him entering the game, he would not be an eligible substitute and be asked to return to the locker room. In this situation, no technical foul would be assessed.
