Lane Violations

Is it just me or are players getting worse about entering the lane too early on Free Throws? This seems to have gotten worse and worse over the past 3-4 years. Should this be NFHS Point of Emphasis before the NBA destroys the high school game?

Guessing the NCAA is "destroying" the high school game by allows players to enter in on the release as well?

I dunno if I'd say it's gotten worse. IMO, it can be difficult for players to sit there and wait, for what must seem like a long time, for the ball to hit the ring/backboard and enter the lane. That and some officials don't like to get this call unless it's blatant.

If you were a true purist, you'd want it to go back to the way it was, just like the NCAA rule. I don't see it here, probably because we call it.

It is not getting worse IMO, it is just about the same. You have some players and certainly coaches that do not know the rule after all these years and act like you are making it up when they violate.

Peace

And, More Importantly, Where Are My Car Keys ???

Quick question for really experienced veterans. Is it just my imagination, but hasn't the NFHS gone from "hit" to "release" back to "hit" over the past thirty-plus years?

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.: It's probably too cold in Ohio for you to go up into your attic "library", so just give me an answer from memory, if you have any memory left at your age.

IF it is, in fact, getting worse....it's not the NBA or NCAA or video games or whatever....it's because officials are not enforcing this rule.

you promote what you permit.

Not to speak for Mark, his library of past Rules books is better preserved than mine. Your statement is somewhat correct: The order would be inverted - NFHS went from "hit" to "release" and now back to "hit." I'm sorry that I don't have the years of reference for the changes.

Prior to the early 80's (and I do not mean 1880's either, ) the rule for NBCUSC (later NFHS for boys'/girls' and NCAA Men's, and even later NCAA Women's), NAGWS (women's college and in some places girls' H.S.), FIBA, and State of Iowa which was still playing six-girl basketball at the H.S. level, the rule was "contact with the backboard or rim". Then the NFHS and NCAA Men's (and later NCAA Women's) went to "on the release" and then the NFHS went back to "contact with the backboard or rim" which we still have now.

So endth the history lesson. And Billy you are correct I did it from memory, and what was I supposed be writing about in this post, LOL.

Sorta like the "Whaddya do if the coach is griping all game?" Call the dang violation, and call it early. The kid won't violate again unless he wants the hair dryer treatment from his coach at halftime.

Thanks Rob1968. I fixed it. I didn't realize that you were one of our more experienced Forum members. 1968? High school graduation?

Anybody remember why the NFHS went back to the "hit"?

To curtail rough play during rebounding because nobody was supposedly calling fouls.
