Had a correctable error situation in a game this past weekend. I thought I might share it so hopefully others can learn from it. Team A is fouled by Team B on an inbounds play. Report the foul, beckon subs in, then put the ball back in play. On the ensuing inbounds Team B steals the ball and is fouled by Team A on the attempted layup. As I report the shooting foul, the scorer frantically beckons me over and informs me that Team A was entitled to bonus free throws when they were fouled
So I get together with my partner and inform him of the situation. We end up letting Team A shoot their bonus free throws with the lane cleared, and then resume play at the POI which was the free throws for Team B. I double checked when I got home and sure enough, we did it right. Moral of the story? If the scoreboard doesn't display team fouls, ALWAYS ask the scorer what the team foul count is. It will prevent a situation like this.
Coach of Team A was not too happy about this. He felt that we should have wiped out Team B's steal and foul shot entirely since it happened under false pretenses. Yeah, sure coach
